Moved from Fear to Joy: A Christmas Gift that Keeps GivingLet Ev’ry Heart Prepare Him Room

“Let earth receive her King.  Let ev’ry heart prepare Him room and heav’n and nature sing….” (Lutheran Service Book 387).  Although often regarded as a Christmas hymn, Isaac Watts’ “Joy to the World” is replete with Advent themes.  Preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ the King, the earth experiences joy because our salvation is near.  As “He comes to make His blessings flow,” we do not want to clog those justice arteries with sin by being jack-knifed tractor trailers on the highway of our God.

“No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground….”  Advent is a time of repentance, preparation, hope and renewal.  These weeks afford us opportunities to get ready for the arrival of the Lover of our souls, the Healer of our every ill, the Hope of Glory, the Prince of Peace.  Behold, your King comes to you.  He loves you.  He died on the cross and rose again from the dead to save you.  He welcomes you in the waters of baptism to receive His forgiveness, redemption and life.  He nourishes you at His Altar with His own Body and Blood.  He sustains you with His Word that alone brings transformation, recreation, joy and life.  He is coming back in glory to judge the living and the dead and His Kingdom will have no end.

If Advent is a season of making preparations for the King’s coming, then:

How are you preparing for the coming of the King this year?

Are you making time to light the Advent wreath?

Are you carving out time to pray?

Are you protecting the time you have set aside for corporate Bible study and personal devotions?

Are you setting aside funds to assist in the extension of the Kingdom, not only funds to purchase gifts

for people?

Are you confessing your sins to one another so that you may be reconciled?

Are you coming into His presence with thanksgiving, saturating your schedule with opportunities

to give thanks to God for His goodness in the midst of the congregation?

Are you giving up bad habits once and for all so that you may enjoy the new life Christ gives you?

Are you refusing to gossip about others?

Are you seeking justice, loving kindness and walking humbly with your God?

Are you praying for family, friends and enemies?

Are you looking for opportunities to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with others?

Let earth receive her King.  Let us receive our King.  Let every heart prepare Him room.  Clear out the garbage in your life in the Name of Jesus.  Call upon the Holy Spirit to renew you.  Gather with the faithful.  Make the time.  Go to sleep earlier and get up earlier so you can do what you know you need to do as His child.  Just do it.  Reclaim your calendar.  Clear out the clutter.  Come with your offerings as you enter into His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise.  Lift up the cup of salvation and call on the Name of the Lord.  Pay your vows to the Lord in the presence of His people, in the courts of the Lord’s house.  He who is worthy to be praised beckons you.  Your Bridegroom waits for you at the Altar.  Experience His unfathomable love and profound welcome this Advent and always.

Peace, joy and love,

Pastor
