Moved from Fear to Joy: A Christmas Gift that Keeps GivingWhat Do You Want for Christmas?

“What do you want for Christmas?”  It is a question asked to little children who are perched on Santa Claus’ lap.  It is the inquiry made by parents of their sons and daughters as thoughts of trees and lights and stockings become all the more real.  It is the query on the minds of lovers who want to impress each other.  It is the pressing subject matter of commercial businesspeople who want consumers to purchase their products in stores or online.

“What do you want for Christmas?”  It can be such a defeating question, especially when what one wants for Christmas is far beyond our budgets or our credit cards.  It can be a wishy-washy wish list offered in haste in the malaise of shopping mall muzak.  It can be the yearning of silent introvert, hoping that someone will ask and the list can be offered gently and hopefully.  Somehow, deep down inside our sinful selves, we believe that God will give us what we want for Christmas…and if He will not, then maybe someone will.

We ask the question and we want someone to ask us the question.  Perhaps, though, the question needs to be redirected.  What about praying to God, “What do You want for Christmas?”  After all, it is the celebration of Christ Jesus’ birth.  Is it inappropriate to ask God what God may want in the cacophony of Christmas cards and the gargantuan giving of gifts?

Since this is the celebration of Christ’s birth, what is it that He wants for Christmas?  The answer is simple: you.  He went from heaven to earth to be born 2000 years ago in order to die on a cross for us to rescue us from sin, death and the devil.  In a word, He was born for you.  He rose again so that we would rise with Him.  In a word, He rose for you.  He is coming back so that He will raise us up and bring us into His new creation.  In a word, He is coming back for you.  He really loves you dearly.

You are what the Lord wants for Christmas.  He wants to dine with you.  That is why the day and  twelve day season is called, “ChristMass.”  Come to the Eucharist.  Come often.  Come with joy.  Come expecting to experience the joy of your ever-waiting Father, the ever-giving Son and the ever breahing Spirit.  Rejoice that instead of buying clothes that do not fit, jewelry that will soon break, fruitcake that will get passed along to others or reindeer sweaters that never fit right, our Lord simply wants us for ChristMass.  He who gave us Himself wants us—wants you—this ChristMass and always.  “Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.”

“All I want for ChristMass it you.”  Come, then, to His house for ChristMass and repeat the sounding joy!

Peace and love,
