Moved from Fear to Joy: A Christmas Gift that Keeps GivingThank God for the Prince of Peace.

Our world needs the Prince of Peace.  And He has come.  Economic injustice has become disgustingly fashionable.  Terrorism has become commonplace.  Environmental desecration has been supported and funded.  That is why Jesus the Prince of Peace comes to give all of Adam and Eve’s children their daily bread, to cast out fear with perfect love through His innocent suffering and death, and to champion the world so much that He Himself became flesh to dwell among us and initiate His new creation.

Our nation needs the Prince of Peace.  And He has come. Secularism slays morality.  Racism ravages people groups.  Violent intolerance rules and ruins individuals to the detriment of fostering true community.  That is why Jesus the Prince of Peace comes to restore the love covenant that we broke, to unite people differentiated and distanced from each other through His precious blood shed on the cross, and to invite all people to experience His divine mercy and resurrection grace under the banner of His love.

Our city needs the Prince of Peace.  And He has come.  The greedy rich sack the humble poor.  Consumerism dominates decisions that govern the future.  Freedom has become an excuse for self-centeredness.  That is why Jesus the Prince of Peace comes to cast down the mighty from their thrones while lifting up the lowly, to show us how more blessed it is to give than to receive, and to liberate us from the mirage of individual freedoms by bringing us to the redeeming baptismal waters of communion with Him and true community with each other.

Our homes need the Prince of Peace.  And He has come.  Discord divides us.  Grudges gobble us up.  Abusive individualism infects us.  That is why Jesus the Prince of Peace comes to unite those who have been driven apart by despair, to forgive and absolve us so that we may forgive each other, and to transport us from the sinking ship of our ego-maniacal self-obsessions to the ark of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

We need the Prince of Peace.  And He has come.  Depression dampens our celebrations.  Doubts assail us.  Pride paralyzes us.  Sin consumes us.  That is why Jesus the Prince of Peace comes to cheer us in the night with His abiding light, to outshout our doubt with the truth of His Word, to unwind and uncurl us from our navel-gazing that puffs us up in order to unravel us into the lasting love that builds us up, and to forgive us all that is past as He graciously feeds us His precious Body and Blood for our life and salvation.

Thank God for the Prince of Peace.  We really need Him.  Thank God the Prince of Peace has come.  We really need Him right now.  And thank God He delivers, just as He promises, in every Liturgy of Word and Sacrament as we look forward in hope to His return in glory.

Hail, the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!

Hail, the Sun of Righteousness!

Light and life to all He brings

Ris’n with healing in His wings.

Mild He lays His glory by,

Born that man no more may die,

Born to raise the sons of earth,

Born to give them second birth.

Hark! The herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!” (Lutheran Service Book, 380:3)

A Blessed ChristMass to you!

Peace and love,

Pastor
