Moved from Fear to Joy: A Christmas Gift that Keeps GivingFollowing

The magi followed a star to the child Jesus and they followed the direction not to return to Herod.  Andrew, Peter, James, John and the other disciples followed Christ at His invitation.  “Follow me,” Jesus said (St. Matthew 4:19).  So much of the Christian life is about following.

We do not like to follow, especially when we think that our way is better than our leader’s way.  We so often want to tell God where we should go and we ask Him to bless our decisions, even though we have not sought Him and His direction.  Our sin impedes our following Him.

We also do not like to follow when we do not know the way.  Thomas felt this way when he asked, “How shall we know the way?”  “I am the Way…” Jesus said (St. John 14:1-6).  He is our leader and He does not need to tell us the specifics about where we are going with Him.  He leads not only to green pastures and still waters; He leads us to the cross.   At His cross, He suffered and died to save us from our sin and its penalty.  His way is the way of the cross.  His way is also the way to new life.  It is the way of resurrection.

In following Christ, we show the world who Christ is.  We proclaim Him to the world.  We tell the world that we are Christians—followers of Christ.  “Where He leads me, I will follow…I’ll go with Him, with Him all the way” as the Ernest Blandy hymn describes it.

Let us go with Him “all the way.”  Let us do so not by asking to be the leader but by being thankful that we are called to follow Him.  He is calling us at the font of forgiveness, redemption and salvation.  He is calling us at the ambo of the Word of Law and Gospel.  He is calling us at the altar of His Body and Blood.  He is calling us in the community of the ever-following faithful.  Follow Him from the font to the altar and from the altar to the world and go in peace to serve Him wherever He leads you.

Peace and hope in Christ our Leader,

Pastor
