Moved from Fear to Joy: A Christmas Gift that Keeps GivingCrisp, Wet, Crimson Leaves

Crisp, wet, crimson leaves

Sprinkled on the city’s cold cement,

Leaving the barren boughs of a stately tree

Whose arms stretch wide from the dusky depths into the dark, azure sky.

Crisp, wet, crimson leaves:

A sign of death.

The ever-giving tree no longer green

But giving unto death and now showing its true colors.

Crisp, wet, crimson leaves:

Like droplets of lifeblood from the bleeding cross of Jesus,

Beckoning all who see to gaze on the old, rugged tree of life

On which hung the Savior of the whole world.

Crisp, wet, crimson leaves

Wet with water and irrefutably red,

Like the water and the blood from His pierced side.

Ignored by most, like most in the Fall,

Yet treasured by His followers who walk in His way.

Suffering Christ, have mercy on me.

Dying Christ, redeem Thou me.

Risen Christ, reach Thou me.

Ascended Christ, pray for me.

Returning Christ, raise Thou me.

Let me treasure every leaf, every word.

Let me savor every sip of Your atoning blood.

Let me cherish every drop from Your forgiving font.

Let me relish every day of Your life-giving life.

Crisp, wet, crimson leaves.

Never shall I see them the same way again,

Nor the barren boughs of that stately tree stretching wide

From the dusky depths into the dark, azure sky.

Crisp, wet, crimson leaves

Cry out with me: Even so, Lord Jesus, quickly come.
